Things You'll Need:
- Hat
- Vinyl measuring tape
- Worsted weight yarn
- Crochet hook size G
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Sewing needle
- Sewing thread that matches the yarn
-
Step 1
Measure the circumference of the hat. The measuring tape should be snug but not pulled so tightly that the hat buckles or your band will be too small.
-
Step 2
Place the end of the tape measure perpendicular to where the brim of the hat folds and measure up to determine how wide you need the band to be.
-
Step 3
Make a crochet chain that is one chain longer than the measurement you took in Step 1. Double check the fit around the hat.
-
Step 4
Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and all the way across. Chain (ch) 1 then turn.
-
Step 5
Single crochet across, ch 1 and turn at the end. Repeat this step until the width of the piece measures the same as the measurement you took in Step 2.
-
Step 6
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
-
Step 7
Place the band on the hat and check the fit. If your measurements were correct, the ends should meet perfectly. If the band is a little long, it's okay to overlap in the back before sewing--it won't be noticeable.
-
Step 8
Use a yarn needle to sew the two short ends of the band together with a simple whip stitch. The band is now in the shape of a circle.
-
Step 9
Place the completed hat band on your hat. Use sewing thread the same color as the band and sew tiny invisible stitches randomly along the band to secure it to the hat.
