Word searches are a great puzzle to jog your mind and keep it sharp. Many publishers market word search books and virtual games, but you can make your own word searches at home. They cost no money, and the best part is you'll be able to share your games with family and friends. Make a few copies of your puzzle and start the craze. Everyone can appreciate a little brain food, especially when it's free.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blank sheet of 8 1/2- by 11-inch computer paper
  • Back permanent marker
  1. Step 1

Brainstorm a few ideas and come up with a theme for your puzzle. This is seen in most word search puzzles and makes it more fun for the player.

  2. Step 2

Designate a portion of the paper for the word bank, a list of 10 to 20 words for your players to search for that relate to your theme. For example, if your theme is autumn, some of your words may be "leaves" or "pumpkins." Depending on how large you want your puzzle to be, you may have more than 20 words.

  3. Step 3

Write out the words from your list one by one in the center of the paper where your puzzle is going to be. Write them vertically, horizontally, diagonally or backward, depending on how difficult you want the game to be.

  4. Step 4

Fill in the spaces between the words with random letters. Make sure you have the same number of letters in each row and column to keep it in an even, grid-like formation.

  5. Step 5

Print out a number of copies to give out to your friends and family.

Tips & Warnings
  • Give your puzzles rankings, such as "beginner" or "difficult," to help your players find which level is suited for them.
  • Having too many words in a small puzzle will lower the difficulty for players. The number of words in your bank should determine the size of the puzzle.
