Horses range in temperament, from spirited to bombproof. This can come from breeding, training or natural personality. The easiest horse to ride is the lazy horse. With a lazy horse, you don't have to worry about the horse taking off with you or spooking at everything he sees along the trail. The only problem is you might get a little tired of walking slowly everywhere. Here's a guide for getting the most out of your lazy mount, and enjoying the time on horseback.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crop
  • Spurs
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Ride your horse on a regular schedule. A horse can get lazy because he is out of shape and not being ridden enough.

  2. Step 2

Have a routine on your rides. Spend some time riding at all three gaits--walk, trot and canter. Getting your horse used to demands for a little speed will perk him up.

  3. Step 3

Use a crop to reinforce your leg cues. Tap the horse gently on the flank with your crop if he doesn't respond to your leg.

  4. Step 4

Use spurs as a last resort. Spurs encourage the horse to respond quicker, but ultimately you want him to respond to your leg and seat aids.

  5. Step 5

Learn to daydream. If you're stuck with a lazy horse, sit back and enjoy the ride. Maybe there's no need to rush anywhere. These might be the best moments of your day.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have the horse vet checked to rule out any medical problems that could be causing his laziness.
