Ever had a favorite t-shirt that was too large for you? Ever outgrown your favorite shirt? I will show you an easy way to resize a shirt, to make it larger or smaller, so you can wear your favorite tees and look fabulous in them!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • T-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread, same color of fabric recommended
  • Extra fabric (for making larger)
  • Measuring tape, if necessary
  1. Step 1

First, you will need to determine how much larger or smaller the shirt needs to be. If it's too large, put it on and grab the extra fabric around the sides until the shirt fits how you would like. Either mark the fabric or just eyeball it, but make sure you leave room enough for sewing.

If the shirt is too small, guess at how much larger it will need to be, either by eyeballing or hold it up to you and see how much it lacks meeting the seams of the shirt you're wearing. You will need to add a panel to each side, so however many inches you deem necessary, you will need to divide it by two. So if you need a total of four inches to make the shirt fit, you will need two two-inch panels, one for each side.

  2. Step 2

Now, you need to cut the shirt in half up the seams. Include the sleeves - you will need to make them larger or smaller, too. If you're making it smaller, cut a bit off of each side, however much you measured in step 1. If you're making it larger, you will need to measure the length of the shirt, sleeves too, and cut a panel of fabric (that long and as wide as determined above) from something else.

  3. Step 3

Now all you have to do is sew! To make it smaller, just sew the two sides together. Make sure you turn the fabric inside out so the seam is inside the shirt. To make the shirt larger, flip the shirt inside out, pin the panels in place, and sew up.

The sleeves should work the same as the rest of the shirt, but be sure to keep it all even. Make sure the fabric doesn't bunch, and be careful of leaving too much in one spot and not enough in another.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try using different colored fabric for the extending panels. It could jazz up a simple black t-shirt.
  • Another fun way to make a shirt smaller - cut it in half along the seams, cut holes along the sides, and use laces or strips of fabric to tie the sides up.
  • If you mess it up, don't worry! You can always use the fabric for another project, or you could cut off the logo on the shirt and sew it onto another one.
  • Look for the book Generation T - there are lots of cool ideas in there for t-shirt surgery.
