Things You'll Need:
- Screwdriver
- Rubber mallet
- New lock
-
Step 1
Open the door, and turn the knob so the bolt is fully out and the screws are exposed. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws completely. You may need to push on the face of the lock on the outside of the door while unscrewing.
-
Step 2
Remove the inside lock face.
-
Step 3
Take out the outside lock face.
-
Step 4
Take the screws out next to the bolt on the edge of the door. With these screws out, the bolt section should slide out if you pull on the bolt. If the screws came out easy, put a drop of glue on a piece of toothpick or splinter and put it into the screw hole.
-
Step 5
If you are re-using the same finish of lock, it will probably be easiest to leave the ring around the key hole in place. Otherwise you'll need to tap it out, and tap in the new one with a rubber mallet.
-
Step 6
Insert the new bolt into the edge of the door. The center hole should be in the center of the circular hole drilled in the door. If it isn't you may need to remove the bolt and twist it 180 degrees to adjust the depth.
-
Step 7
Screw in the screws on the edge of the door.
-
Step 8
Put the new outside lock face assembly in. Insert the rod through the center hole in the bolt mechanism. Align the keyhole vertically and at the bottom. See the picture in step 3.
-
Step 9
Put the new inside lock face assembly onto the rod coming through the center from the lock face. Line up the screw holes to the right and left of the center. Check to make sure the key hole is vertical, and screw the screws in through the inside plate. See the picture in step 2.
-
Step 10
Double check to make sure the lock works, and the door closes.
