Even if you don't like football, there's nothing like Sunday football food in the early fall. It's a great excuse to cook for a crowd or just for a few people. You don't have to be an NFL fan to enjoy Five Spice Beer Can Chicken. It's easy to make and has a distinct flavor (think Chinese). Marinate ahead of time and you have an easy game day main dish.

When you say the words "beer" and "football" in one sentence, you're a hero. Especially here in New England when the New England Patriots take the field. Our area is one of extreme fans who love tailgating, Sunday football and screaming fans around a table of good food.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 to 5 lb. roasting chicken (I have also used a cut up fryer for this)
  • Water
  • 1/2 can of beer
  • 1 tbsp. rock salt
  • 2 tbsp. garlic salt
  • 1 tsp. five spice powder
  • 2 to 3 tbsp. honey
  1. Step 1

Put whole chicken into a pot and add just enough water to cover; add beer and rock salt; marinate for 8 hours. Any beer will do but I would steer clear of really dark malt beers so it doesn't overpower the flavor of the chicken.

  2. Step 2

Remove chicken from marinade and rub garlic salt and five spice powder inside and out. Let stand 4 hours.

You can find five spice powder on the spice aisle of your local market or at specialty food market.

  3. Step 3

Rub honey over chicken just before roasting on a rack in a 375 degree oven for 1 hour. Baste with 1 tablespoon honey after the first 1/2 hour. Cut into small pieces before serving.

    Enjoy!
