There are quite a few safe and effective household items that you can put to good use if you have a problem with pesky ants in your kitchen.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Plants-
If you enjoy gardening, try planting a couple plants that are known to detract pest. You may also put a few in planters and set them about your house to help ward them off. Plants that deter ants include onion, mint and spearmint, southernwood, and tansy.

  2. Step 2

    Cinnamon-
Ants can't stand the smell of Cinnamon. The good thing about this is that most people enjoy the smell and there are all sorts of Cinnamon scented products that you can buy. You may also sprinkle pure Cinnamon around the house where you see ants most often to chase them away.

  3. Step 3

    Vinegar-
Ants really don't like the sour taste and smell of vinegar. If you don't mind it yourself, spill a small amount around door and window frames, under appliances, and anywhere else you have noticed ants marching. It should discourage them.

  4. Step 4

    Lemons-
Ants also don't like the smell of lemons. I found this highly effective. I cut lemons and left them sit on the counter. I bought all my cleaning products lemon scented, and even threw fresh lemons into my cleaning water. Lemons have also been known to help with roaches and fleas.

  5. Step 5

    Cloves-
These are great as a lasting anti-ant proofing tool. Just place some bay leaves or whole cloves in corners of your cupboard shelves and windowsills. They stay fresh up to a full year.

  6. Step 6

    Baby powder-
If you can find where ants are coming in to your home you can place a layer of baby powder there to keep ants out. It smells good, is safe for children, and wont attract other pest, but ants usually wont crawl through the powder.

  7. Step 7

Ants will not normally cross a line of flour, bone meal, powdered charcoal, cream of tarter, red chili pepper, paprika, or dried peppermint. You can use the same technique as with the baby powder to create your own barrier and keep them outside.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pick the tricks that work best for your home, and stick with them. Keep working at chasing them off and eventually they will give up and move on.
  • Try your hardest to keep crumbs and spills, dirty dishes, and garbage cleaned up around the house.
  • Also look outside in the area surrounding your home for anything that might attract them.
