Things You'll Need:
- frosty freezer
- blunt tool (butter knife)
- heat gun
- bath towel
- hand towel or rag
-
Step 1
defrost freezerPut a bath towel down on the floor in front of the refrigerator. The defrost freezer project can get messy and wet, and the towel is for your own safety, so that you will not slip on a wet floor. It will also be easier to clean up when you are done, if you put a towel down first.
-
Step 2
defrost freezerOpen freezer door. Take out all the food. Put the food in the refrigerator (or ice chest, optional), so it will stay cool while you defrost freezer.
-
Step 3
defrost freezerCarefully remove any chunks of ice or frost that you can. Put them in the sink to melt. It is best to just use your hand, if possible. Be careful and gentle. Don't pull on anything. There are coils that you can not see, and they are delicate. If you break the coils, you might have to buy a new fridge!
-
Step 4
defrost freezerIf necessary, you can use a blunt tool -- nothing sharp! A regular butter knife or spoon will do fine. Use this tool to scrape off ice or frost. Be careful!
-
Step 5
defrost freezerUse the heat gun if there is big solid block of ice. Plug in heat gun, turn on, and blow warm air until the ice starts to melt enough to remove. Turn off heat gun and put it away. Be careful that you do not let the heat gun or cord get wet. Water and electricity is a dangerous combination.
-
Step 6
defrost freezerAs you are doing the defrost freezer project, use the hand towel or rag to wipe up all the water as it melts. When you are all finished, be sure to wipe out the freezer with a clean hand towel or rag, so everything is clean and dry.
-
Step 7
After you defrost freezer, put the food back in and close the door tightly. Make sure the door is tightly closed at all times, and you will not need to do the defrost freezer thing again anytime soon. If your freezer door will not close tightly, you need to get that fixed, so that your food will stay frozen properly, for your own safety. A freezer door that closes properly will save you money, too.
