Get Rid of Spiders in Your Home

Does the sight of a spider send you running to find a shoe or other object to smash it with? Though this method is satisfying, it doesn't always work...either the spider gets away before you can kill it, or you injure it and it still crawls away. Here are some surefire ways to stop spiders dead in their tracks: Does this Spark an idea?

The first thing to do when launching an offensive against all spiders in your home is to get some sort of a bug bomb. I prefer Raid brand Concentrated Deep Reach (TM) Fogger. Whichever product you buy, make sure to read on the package whether it does or doesn't kill spiders. This particular one that I prefer does kill spiders, as well as many other insects. Bug bombing your house is the first step to getting rid of any of these annoying eight-legged creatures that exist in your house currently, and some brands even guarantee that they will keep working even after the initial bombing - maybe even up to a couple of months.

Another thing to do is get some pheremone traps (sold at most home improvement stores) and place them in dark places under beds or behind furniture where spiders might lurk. They are little cardboard boxes with open ends that contain a scent that is undetectable to humans, but attracts spiders. They then get stuck in the box and die there. I have tried these with mild success.

Obviously, you can't bug bomb your house constantly, and spiders will continue to get in, especially as the weather turns colder in the Fall. For a smaller scale attack (such as a stray spider here and there after you've bug bombed), I like to spray the spider with a potent cleaning product (think shower cleaner, etc.), or you could even make your own bleach or ammonia solution in a squirt bottle. This is a great way to ensure the death of the eight-legged offender, while not having to get close to it!

Another great way to contain spiders is to use the wand on your vacuum to suck up the spider. It probably eventually dies in the bag, amid all the dust and other particles, but just be aware when you change the vacuum bag. I prefer this for small, non-offensive spiders, and for cleaning up spider carcasses after bug-bombing or ammonia-spraying.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can never be too safe around spiders - if you think a spider is poisonous, use care getting rid of the remains even after it's dead.

  • If you use bug bombs, be careful to follow all directions on the outside of the container.
