Geese may be pretty, but they're pesty!

Boy, geese can be real pests. They might officially be called Canadian geese, but they sure do spend a lot of time in the U.S.! If you're frustrated and tired of the incessant squawking, piles of droppings, feathers and occasional mad goose attack, learn how to effectively rid your yard of geese. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase some goose control products. This is probably the simplest method. There are a good variety of products on the market, ranging from cheap scare tape to expensive scarecrow sprinklers, floating deterrents and a supposedly ultra-effective goose repellent laser.

    • 2

Set up some decoys. This can range from fake dead geese on the lawn to fake predators such as dogs or coyotes to fake swans, which are so protective of their territory that geese leave them alone. However, this may require moving the decoys every day to achieve a realistic effect, and can become tiresome in the long run.

    • 3

Play a loud prerecorded tape of birds in distress. This works to keep the geese away, but you and your neighbors have to put up with the noise, too.

    • 4

Get a herding dog, like a Border Collie or an Australian Shepherd. They'll keep the lawn clear for you -- no charge. If you elect to get a dog, be sure it is a herding dog and not a killing dog. Keep in mind that you'll have to let your dog run free in the yard to drive off the geese, so if you live in an area where you wouldn't want your dog to run off, this may not be the choice for you.

    • 5

Change your landscape. Geese like wide, open spaces. If you add more shrubbery and lawn decorations, they may leave your yard alone of their own accord. And if you live on a pond or other water, let the grasses grow tall. Geese don't like the water so much when the grasses around it are more than 18 inches high.

    • 6

Get a goose-hunting permit. I would only use this as a last resort, as the permit may be difficult to obtain and killing wildlife is rather inhumane. Is it really fair to kill something just because it pooped on your lawn?

Tips & Warnings

  • Killing geese is illegal in most countries.

  • Do not, under any circumstances, feed the geese or let anyone you know feed the geese.
