How to File For Divorce By Yourself and Without the Expense of An Attorney's Retainer

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access, or
  • Court Clerk Access
  1. Step 1

Go to your county courthouse and find the court clerk's office. The clerk should have a "divorce packet". This packet should contain all the information you will need to file for divorce. This packet will most usually cost a small fee. If you qualify, this packet will be free and the filing fees will be free.

  2. Step 2

If you cannot get to the courthouse, you should be able to get access to these forms through the internet. Most counties and states have access to many court forms. For examples, the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals has forms available online. These forms can be printed from your home computer and instructions are also available. These forms are free of charge.

  3. Step 3

Complete these forms and file them with your court clerk. Again, there is usually a fee for filing unless you qualify as low income.
