I've been cooking for a long time growing up with the relatives. In my culture the oldest girl in the family is expected to help out with housekeeping and cooking and do other womanly chores. Although we used a rice cooker then there were times when just a small of amount of rice gets cooked right on top of the stove.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deep pot
  • Lid or plate
  • Water
  • Imperial Dragon white rice brand
  1. Step 1

Add to the pot 2 cups of dry rice

  2. Step 2

Wash the rice and drain. Repeat if necessary. You do not need to drain completely. Wash until the rinse water runs clear.

  3. Step 3

Add enough water to cover the rice about an inch in depth. Use your index finger to measure. The surface water should be about the second line on your index.

  4. Step 4

Cook it on high with the pot uncovered. When the water starts to boil reduce the heat to low.

  5. Step 5

The water should be cooked off but not completely at this point. You'll notice bubbles coming out of the little holes.

  6. Step 6

Now cover the rice with a lid or plate. Simmer the rice at the lowest setting for 10 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Uncover and fluff up rice with a fork or a butter knife. Cover again for another 5 minutes. Turn the stove off and serve while still warm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the right amount of water
  • 2 dry cups of rice will result in 4 to 6 serving when cooked\
  • If the rice turns out to be somewhat crunchy, add a couple tablespoon of water and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  • Too much water will make your rice mushy
  • Cooking time may vary depending on what rice you're using
  • More water and time are needed for brown rice
  • Do not leave the stove until it's shut off
