Cervical (Neck) Collar

Wearing a cervical (neck) collar or brace is difficult. When it is necessary to keep the head/neck in a neutral position, doctors usually prescribe the use of one, but don't always give helpful feedback on how to stay comfortable wearing one. Here's some easy tips on how to maximize your comfort and get some more sleep while wearing a cervical collar.

Things You'll Need

  • Cervical Collar
  • Comfortable bed/chair

Instructions

    • 1

Support your back - your back takes a lot of pressure when wearing the collar, it is held in a sometimes uncomfortable position. Use a nice chair with lumbar (lower back) support, or use a pillow to support your back. Make sure to sit up straight, don't slouch, in a neutral and natural position for maximum comfort.

    • 2

Try lying on your side or front - Lying on your back puts additional pressure on the muscles holding up your neck. If it is uncomfortable, try a different position - on your back or side. You can also try sleeping upright in a chair (see above) if nothing is uncomfortable. Use adequate support for your head and back!

Make sure to support your head! - Using a cervical collar strains the head as well as the sternocletomastoid in your neck. Use a pillow to support your head in a natural position, inline with your neck and back to avoid muscle strain.
