Potty training can often times be difficult. All children are different and some methods might not work with all children

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a potty
  • a toddler
  1. Step 1

First off potty training can not be rushed. Your child will let you know when they are ready. One of the first signs that your child is ready is when they begin taking their diaper off when it is soiled. They may also insist on going with you when you go to the bathroom.

  2. Step 2

Some people run out and buy expensive training pants when they start potty training. If your child is still soiling diapers they will do the same in the training pants. The training pants are more for children that already have the idea of going potty. Try letting your child run around with nothing on. Then once your child begins to get the idea of going potty try putting underwear on them.

  3. Step 3

Don’t expect your child to learn how to use the potty over night. It takes time and patients. They will have accidents but that is all a part of learning. Don’t get upset with your child for having an accident, this will only discourage them. Tell them that next time they should try to make it to the potty instead of going in the floor or in their pants.

  4. Step 4

Don’t be upset if your child is doing great and then back tracks and starts having more accidents than usual. It does happen most of the time. Just be sure to ask your child about ever half an hour if they have to go potty. Often if your child is playing they won’t tell you that they have to go. Try to help them remember that they need to use the potty.

  5. Step 5

When your child does use they potty reward them for it by telling them good job. Making the potty an exciting thing will help encourage them. Make your child a potty chart and put a sticker on it every time they use the potty. Or try offering them a piece of candy or a yummy snack every time they use the potty. M&M’s work great for this.
