Step 1
First, know how to recognize a tar file.
Tar files are files that are compressed or archive files. They are similar to zip files and rar files. You can recognize a tar file as a file with a .tar.gz extension or .tar. -
Step 2
Once you have a tar file, download the tar file into a place you can quickly find it (like your desktop on your computer).
-
Step 3
Next, make sure you have decompression software installed on your computer. There are many free versions of decompression software.
-
Step 4
Next, browse to where you saved your tar file. If you saved it on your desktop, you can go straight to the desktop.
-
Step 5
Next, right click the file and select "Open With" and if you see your decompression program select the program and "untar" the tar file.
-
Step 6
Select "Choose Program" if you do not see your program listed. If your decompression software is not showing up on this list, you may have to set an option in the program to have it appear as an option for tar files.
