How to Warp a Bead Loom

Bead-weaving looks complicated, but it isn't. With a few supplies, you can enjoy the benefits of weaving. Setting up a loom to make woven bracelets with beads doesn't have to be difficult. Here is one way to wrap your loom. Soon you will be on your way to making woven bracelets, belts and other things with beads.

In selecting your supplies, make sure your thread is a strong one, like silk or Nymo. Otherwise, it will fray or break, causing you to go in and repair it later.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the length on your bead loom if it has adjustable lengths. Make sure your loom is the length needed for your project.

    • 2

Locate the hooks, tees or pegs at each end. These will anchor your thread and keep it from slipping. If your loom doesn't have anything included to wrap the ends of the thread around for this purpose, you can use golf tees. If you add the golf tees yourself, put them in holes about the center of your loom. Make sure they're in tight so they don't slip while you're weaving.

    • 3

Tie a slip knot in the end of your thread. A slip knot is made like you would tie a balloon. Wrap the thread around your hook (or tee) several times.

    • 4

Stretch your thread across the loom, putting it in a groove at either end of the loom, and wrap it around the opposite hook or tee.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 for as many times as you need. If you're making a bracelet that has 10 beads in it, you need to have 11 rows of thread.

    • 6

Wrap the end of the thread several times around the hook/tee where you end. Make sure it's secure and won't pull out. You're ready to weave with beads.

Tips & Warnings

  • The threads going across your loom after you have wrapped it are called "warp" threads. Your outside threads should be heavier than the inside. Use a stronger thread for these, and either change threads for the inner warps or keep using the same one so you don't have to change. Keep the tension on your thread firm but not too tight.

  • Don't skip checking the tightness of your pegs. If your end pegs are loose, they can come out while you're weaving. Don't pull your warp threads too tight. You don't want a thread to break in the middle of weaving. Don't think you can save money by using regular sewing thread. It isn't strong enough to keep the tension you want while weaving or to support the weight of the beads when you're finished.
