Sweatpants have moved beyond their customary purpose of leisure sportswear for men and woman in today's fashion. Using a number of different fabrics like jersey, terry, or heavy nylon, sweatpants designs have become more functional for everyday and everywhere use. Creating your own pair is quite simple with a pattern book and sewing machine.
Things You'll Need
- Heavy nylon, jersey, or terry fabric
- Sweatpants pattern
- Sewing measure tape
- Sewing machine
- Needle and thread
Take the measurements of the person who will be wearing the sweatpants. You will need to measure the waist, hips, outside seam from waist to ankle and inseam.
Choose a pattern that will work best with your desired fabric. Buy the amount of fabric indicated on the pattern. Remember to ask a store clerk if the pattern runs big or small.
Using the pattern, fold fabric in half and pin the pattern down on the fabric, placing pins every 2 to 3 inches. Carefully cut around the pattern.
Using a needle and thread (with a contrasting thread color) baste the pieces together inside out. This makes the sewing machine process easier and faster. Machine sew pieces together about ¼ inch away from the edge.
Try on pants before adding waistband. Any alterations you need to make to the pants will be easier before you add buttons, zippers, or elastic bands. If they're too loose, cut down or change the seam and sew again with machine.
For the waist, measure the elastic, cutting it 3 to 4 inches shorter than your waist so it can stretch. Folding the waistband around the elastic on the inside of the sweatpants, pin it in place, sew it with the sewing machine
Clean up seams and edges, cut away loose threads, and try on again to check fit.
