Instructions

  1. Advertise

Advertise in the base newspaper. Most military bases have at least a weekly newspaper that is available for free to military members and their families. Some larger bases have newspapers that are published more often. Advertisements in these publications are typically available for less than community newspaper rates. Some publications also publish online, which gives your rental listing additional exposure.

Advertise in the commissary and exchange. The commissary and exchange on a military base are the equivalent of the grocery store and department store in the civilian world. This is where military families conduct all of their shopping on base. At each location, you can post your rental listing on information boards with approval of the facility manager.

Advertise in unit newsletters. Each military unit has a family readiness group or family support group for the members of its unit. This group is the source of information for families within the unit. Many of these groups publish a monthly newsletter, maintain a website and send out regular email communication. This group can facilitate posting a notice in the newsletter for families of the unit.

    List with Base Offices

Contact the housing office on base. The housing office is often the first stop for military members who are new to the area. If housing is not available on post, military members have to seek housing in the community. Many times, the representatives are asked for their recommendations for rentals in the area. Housing offices generally maintain lists of suitable rentals in the area.

Call the community services office. Every military base has a community services office. This office provides information about the military base and is equivalent to a civilian welcome center. The office generally maintains a list of available rentals in the area. The list may also appear in welcome packets that are sent to families who are moving to the area.

Notify the persons who handle extended stay lodging on base. Most military bases have lodging available for families new to the area while they are searching for a place to live or waiting for base housing to become available.

Tips & Warnings

  • Offering a military discount can help to spotlight your rental property. In addition, military members look for favorable lease terms such as being able to break the lease without penalty when deployment orders or orders to move to a new duty station are received.

Good article. Getting one military member in and treating them well (even if they have to break the lease) will get you invaluable word of mouth. Often your renteres will find replacements for you.
