How to Camp in a Tent Trailer

A pop-up trailer or tent trailer provides the convenience of an RV without the requirements or space of a full-size trailer. Pop-up trailers can be towed by a mid-size vehicle and provide basic protection for weekend getaways. Contemporary tent trailers include many amenities associated with RVs such as propane stoves, batteries for lights, refrigerators and bathrooms. The tent trailer is easy to assemble and is efficiently designed with sleeping coves in side extensions. Options such as a sun canopy, power cords and water hoses can make outdoor camping comfortable so the family can focus on enjoying the outdoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a location that is flat and dry, preferably near a water source to fill your water tank as needed, and near an outside power source so that you can charge your battery. Access to a restroom and shower facilities enhance convenience (especially if a bathroom or porta-potty is not built into your trailer).

    • 2

Disconnect your trailer from your vehicle and set up your leveling jacks to hold the trailer securely in position (so it won't rock or roll). Pop up your tent trailer according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Remove the propane and water tanks and set aside during set up. Pull out the extensions on the sides to set up the sleeping areas and adjust the height of the dining table.

    • 4

Connect your propane and water tanks to the appropriate hoses and stow in a dry, protected area (which can be under an extension). Turn on your battery pack, if desired, and check that all appliances are working properly.

    • 5

Place the barbecue grill and outdoor chairs outside, near the trailer, if desired. Pull out the sun canopy and stabilize with poles, if available.

    • 6

Store provisions and supplies in the cooler or refrigerator and in storage cabinets inside the trailer, taking care to hide them from peeping bears.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the smoke and propane detectors are functional. Keep your valuables and clothing hidden while away from the campsite (lock your trailer door if possible).
