How to Choose the Right Kayak Length
Kayaking is a versatile outdoor activity that beginners and experts alike can enjoy. Whether paddling down a fast river or floating on a placid lake, a kayak can be a lighter and sturdier alternative to a canoe or a rowboat. Kayaks come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It doesn't matter if you're tall or on the shorter side, choosing the right kayak length is determined by what type of outdoor adventures you're planning.

Decide how and where you will be using the kayak. Kayak length can range from about 9 to 17 feet. Shorter kayaks are easier to turn and maneuver. Longer ones tend to have larger storage areas for multiday trips. Most recreational kayaks are 9 to 12 feet long and are good for beginners, casual kayakers and shorter day trips. Touring kayaks, generally 12 to 17 feet long, are meant for long distances on open water.

Determine factors that might affect the length of the kayak you purchase. Think about where you will be storing the kayak and how you will be transporting it.

3
Get in and out of the kayak's cockpit to see how easy or hard it is. For safety purposes, it should not be difficult to get out of the boat. Keep in mind that an appropriate kayak length is not determined by how tall a person is. A larger person should buy a kayak that is wider and deeper, not longer.
