You tilled the soil, dug a hole, planted your tomato plant, watered it and watched it grow. But the tomato is still green and the weather's changing. Will a tomato plant die if you leave it in the cold? If it gets cold enough for frost, yes, your tomato plants will die. But there's something you can do to make green tomatoes turn red. All you really need is a warm, dark place and patience.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper bag
  • Banana
  1. Step 1

Pick fully-grown green tomatoes from the tomato plant.

  2. Step 2

Wash tomatoes thoroughly with cool water. Set aside on a towel to dry.

  3. Step 3

Place one ripening banana inside a paper bag. Make sure tomatoes are dry. Add tomatoes to the same paper bag. Ripening bananas contain the ripening gas, ethylene. This gas will aid in ripening tomatoes.

  4. Step 4

Fold bag over and place in a dry, dark place such as a cupboard.

  5. Step 5

Check on tomatoes every few days until tomatoes are lucious, red and ready to eat.
