Add tracking code to a Wordpress site

Adding a tracking code to a Wordpress site is relatively quick and easy to do.

A tracking code allows you to track important statistics related to website traffic and advertising conversions.

Follow these simple instructions to add any tracking code to a Wordpress site.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wordpress site
  • Tracking code (Google Analytics, Statcounter, etc.)
  1. Step 1

First, in order to install a tracking code to a Wordpress site you need to have a site designed in Wordpress. Doing this is fairly easy once you are familiar with it and there is ample material on the internet describing how to create a Wordpress site.

  2. Step 2

Next, retrieve the tracking code you wish to install to your Wordpress site. Instructions for getting the tracking code vary from site to site, but usually it is fairly straightforward and intuitive. Refer to the help section of the particular site if you are having difficulty.

Paste this code into a text document or copy it for later use.

  3. Step 3

Now you need to log as admin on the Wordpress site that you want to add the code to. To do this on a domain that you own, simply add "wp-login.php" after the URL address.

  4. Step 4

Next, enter the Wordpress file/document editor. In the most recent version of Wordpress, this can be found on the left hand side under "Apperance" -> "Editor".

In other versions of Wordpress this may be located in a slightly different place but should be easy to find. Refer to Wordpress Help if you get lost.

  5. Step 5

Now you need to edit the "footer.php" file to insert the tracking code. Click "Footer (footer.php) to edit this document.

  6. Step 6

In the "footer.php" file the last two lines should be (shown below without the symbols:

    body
    html

Insert/paste the tracking code above the body line. Make sure to click "Update File" located below the text box when done to save.

The tracking code is now installed and operational on your Wordpress site.
