Some people are apt to pick up penny they find on the ground, because it gives them the feeling of joy to be having a lucky day. Or they may feel, rightly so, that a penny saved is a penny earned. If you are a coin collector this may provide your impetus. Whereas, most of us would walk on by, since it is not our penny after all. Let's say you trully believe that whoever dropped this penny did not want it anymore. How would you decide if it was worth your while to bend down and grab that puppy up?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • two digit multiplication and division

    1. Let's figure out how much money per hour you are making by picking up a penny off the ground. It maybe takes you 2 seconds, or if you are very tall or have a bad back, 4 seconds. Even if it takes you a whole four seconds, it could be worth it. Please proceed to logical thinking process #2.

  2. Step 2

    2. At 4 seconds per penny, divide 60 by four and what do you get?

  3. Step 3

    3. Fifteen, correct. That's fifteen cents per minute.

  4. Step 4

    4. How many minutes in an hour, multiply by that. Fifteen times sixty equals nine hundred.

  5. Step 5

    5. 900 pennies, you could pick up in an hour. How many dollars per hour is that?

  6. Step 6

    6. $9.00 So, when you bend down to pick up a penny, you are making at least $9.00/Hr.!

    7. Those of us who are quicker or closer to the ground may be able to use the 2 second rule. In that case, asa rule, you would be making twice the amount per hour, 18.00/Hr.!! Now, what do you think of that?

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't want to pick up old pennies, that's OK. Just leave them there for me. I'd fall for my own logic any day, and you?
  • Simply clean your old coins by shaking them in a solution of vinegar water.

on 10/1/2009 I would love to find a few dollars worth of change each day. I find when I go to stadiums and amusement parks there are often a collection of coins near the vendors, and I definitely take a few seconds to grab a few pennies, nickels, dimes, and sometimes even find quarters as well. Great article! 5*
