Step 1
Search websites such as freecycle, craigslist, amazon, and eBay for a good quality used baritone instrument. Many people list items they are trying to clear out of their homes on these sites and you may get lucky and find some very affordable horns that people haven't played in years and want to clear out of their attic.

Step 2
Speak to your local schools to find out if they will be retiring any of their baritone instruments in the near future. Many schools have their own stock of baritones and tubas for their band students to use because of the burden of cost on the students' families to buy such expensive instruments. Be aware that a baritone instrument being retired from a school band has been heavily used over a period of years and may be showing the wear and tear.

Step 3
Determine whether or not there is a baritone instrument rental agreement in place if you are locating a horn for your child to play in the school band. Some schools rent out their low brass instruments at low fees and others have agreements with local music stores to rent out baritones on a yearly contract with a reasonable fee for their school district's band students.
