If your dog has an upset tummy, try feeding him a bland diet.

If your dog has a problem with diarrhea you may have been asked by your veterinarian to feed him a bland diet that includes chicken and rice. The important element of this diet is the removal of grease and fat, and the inclusion of fiber and protein. Fiber should be added to help bind your dog's intestines so add it sparingly to the below recipe by adding a teaspoon of a commercially prepared fiber product such as Metamucil or Benfiber.

Things You'll Need

Prepare brown rice according to instructions on the packet. The ratio of chicken to rice should be 2 to 1; therefore, if you have approx. 2 cups of boiled chicken, aim to yield 1 cup of brown rice.

Drain the chicken, rinsing the meat with water so as to remove all of the fat and grease. Allow the chicken to cool and shred with a fork. Mix together the chicken and rice. Serve warm or at room temperature; chicken and rice will keep for 3-5 days in the fridge or longer in the freezer.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should serve your dog chicken and rice for 2-3 days after an episode of diarrhea. When your dog starts to feel better, you can add boiled vegetables or canned pumpkin for flavor.

  • If you don't have brown rice, use white rice. Brown rice is recommended because it is easier for dogs to digest and higher in fiber.

  • Give a dog with diarrhea a small meal of chicken and rice 3 times a day instead of 1 or 2 large meals.

  • Always use boneless and skinless chicken. Chicken bones can choke a dog; the skin can irritate an upset stomach.

  • If the diarrhea does not subside within 24 hours, take your dog to the vet because it could be an indication of a serious illness.
