Whether you are a serious stage actor or a film star the first and most important technique to master is voice quality. I would recommend that all actors and actresses take a vocal class or two to help work on voice development, control, intonation and quality. Your voice and articulation class will teach you how to effectively use your voice as a tool to excite, motivate and captivate your audience. The actor or actress without a well-trained voice is not a good actor or actress.

Always be prepared. If you are given a script, memorize it word-for-word. There are many directors who do not like for actors to add their own words and create things as they go along. If you are meeting with a director before you know their preference, make special attention to always properly memorize your material. Have respect for your craft and always be prepared by knowing and loving your material. When you are prepared it is easier to give a good performance.

Always keep in mind that when you are given a role, you need to dive in and become that person. Visualize all elements of self disappearing and this new character re-appearing in its place. When you eat your bowl of cereal each morning, eat your cereal as this new character you are taking on. Staying in character allows you to fully understand and become the role you are taking on.

Get an acting coach. Just like athletes have coaches, you should have one as well. Your coach will be able to provide you with the feedback and technique development that only a coach can give. Always be open and set aside your ego when working with others on improving your techniques.

Commit to it. Once you know your lines and you know your body movement and timing is present, commit to your role and the rest will come through. Always believe in yourself and never stop in the middle of the scene even if you find yourself messing up. Sometimes only you - yourself- are aware of the mess-up and so if you keep going you will appear more professional and believable.
