Use my easy pattern to make an art apron for kids ages 2 - 6.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

MAKING THE PATTERN: Measure the kid you are making it for from their shoulder down to their mid thigh. Or use our suggested height of 30". Now, you must make a pattern. See image for the pattern style. Lay out a large piece of paper and draw your pattern as follows: Body width 24" body length 30". Then cut out a neck hole, measure from edge of body 4" ( this is your shoulder strap width) the neck diameter will be 16", leaving another 4 " for the other shoulder width. To make it perfectly round measure down 8". Now Cut out your pattern.

  2. Step 2

CUTTING THE FABRIC: Lay out the fabric face down on a clear surface and out the pattern on top of it. pin in place, every few inches. Then cut the front and back panels for the cotton cover fabric and repeat for the lining fabric. You can save time by laying the cotton and lining fabric down together, pin in place and cut CAREFULLY.

  3. Step 3

SEWING THE ART APRON: You can either sew together the edges and turn right-side out or I prefer to use a trim to edge it. To make it look cuter, chose a fun trim to wrap around the edges of the the cover and lining fabric, pin and sew into place from the top shoulder down and around the bottom to the other side top. Do this for the neck as well but NOT across the shoulder. Repeat for the back. Then lay the 2 sides together cover fabric facing each other and pin together at the shoulders. Sew across each shoulder.

Tips & Warnings
  • Also by adding a layer to the front panel while sewing it, you can make a big pocket for craft supplies. Just cut a piece 8 inches high by the 14" width. You must trim the top of the pocket before sewing into place or you can double up the fabric to avoid doing so. You can stitch it down the center to divide the pocket into 2 sections. Do this after sewing complete front panel.
  • Always use caution when cutting and sewing to avoid cutting or poking yourself.
