Step 1
The first step is to gain experience in a particular subject. This step assumes you have chosen a subject of interest for which you would want to be come an expert. Training should be available through school and also through work assignments. Additionally, some fields require certifications. For example, accountants can become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) or network personnel can become Microsoft System Engineers (MSEs).
-
Step 2
The second step is to begin the process of placing yourself in work environments where you are perceived as an "expert". This is done by taking on challenges and solving problems. This approach is particularly useful where you are the only one who has demonstrated an ability to solve particular problems at your location. People will continue to seek your feedback and assistance for future, similar problems that you have previously solved. Continue to research the issues you have solved in the past and notate additional factors and ways to solve these problems. Keep a record of the steps you took to solve problems.
-
Step 3
The third step is use your existing experience as a basis for solving problems outside of your immediate organization. You may find additional opportunities to increase your experience and expertise. In this step you network with others in your field either informally or through conventions or communities of interest.
