When you are in a hurry to sew a coat button back onto your coat, it could cause a problem. If you sew it on too snugly, the button won't slide through the buttonhole smoothly. Pulling on the button could cause the button to come off again. To ensure that you have adequate space, use a matchstick to acquire the right space between the button and coat. Don't forget to use thread that will match the color of the button.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One needle
  • Thread, color that matches the button.
  • Button
  • 1 large matchstick
  1. Step 1

Use a heavy gage thread for sewing on buttons or you can use a double strand of thread. Make sure thread color matches the button color. Place a matchstick between button and fabric, then sew around the button in the usual manner to create a shank.

  2. Step 2

Remove the matchstick, and twirl the end of the thread around the shank several times to reinforce the thread.

  3. Step 3

Then pull the needle through the shank a few times to secure the thread and button.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a thick thread for attaching buttons or double the thread.
  • No warnings.
