Step 1
First you need to find out when and where the auctions will be held. Check your local newspaper in the legal notices section. Sometimes the auctions will be posted, sometimes not. Call around to the local public self storage units in your area and ask them when they hold auctions.
-
Step 2
Plan to arrive early. You will need to sign a terms and conditions form to participate in the auction. Bring cash as this is usually the only form of payment accepted.
-
Step 3
Bring a large vehicle and some helpers in case you win the auction. The unit must be emptied out by the end of the day. You may also need tools for moving large items such as a dolly, blankets, or bungee cords.
-
Step 4
Bring a lock. You may need to leave the public self storage facility to take a lunch break, bathroom break, or for another reason. You don't want to leave the unit unlocked.
-
Step 5
Have a plan for disposing of trash. You won't want to keep every single thing in the storage unit. You may need to take unwanted items to a landfill or dumpster.
-
Step 6
Public self storage auctions can bring you great profit, even if you don't know how to sell on eBay. You can take the items to an eBay drop off store, or hire an eBay Trading Assistant to help you sell the items.
-
Step 7
See the resources section below for more tips and information about selling on eBay.
