How to Reduce Sebum Production
Oily skin can cause thickened skin and clogged pores. Sebum (oil) adds moisture to skin and acts as a protective barrier against bacteria. Excess sebum production is often caused by an imbalance such as dryness, where the body triggers additional production and release of oil. Excess sebum production can be reduced by a consistent skin care or scalp regimen that includes cleansing surface dirt, and using a toner to penetrate pores and a moisturizer to maintain balanced, hydrated skin. Topical medications and lotions can target specific areas of infection (such as acne) or reduce additional irritation (such as sunblock).

Cleanse the affected area (such as face, neck, back or scalp) with a gentle cleanser and rinse thoroughly with cool water. Pat dry with a towel.

Apply moisturizer to the cleansed area using a cotton pad. Avoid rubbing the moisturizer into the skin because it will be absorbed naturally.

Tips & Warnings
Consult with a medical or skin care professional about clogged or infected pores for appropriate treatment and product recommendations. Excessive dryness can trigger excess oil production in the skin, so use a light moisturizer according to your skin condition. Continue your skin care regimen several times each day, if needed, and be patient, as results will not be immediate. Reduce irritation by patting dry with a towel, and for scalp conditions, gently using a wide-tooth comb on wet hair.
