How to Test for Color Fastness

So, you bought that new shirt you just had to have, and the first time you wore it you dumped something on it. Now you wonder if the spot cleaner will leave a mark. Before washing or treating any new items, always test for colorfastness. You can use this same test on upholstery as well as clothing.

Things You'll Need

• Item to be tested
• Spot cleaner
• Water
• Rag

Instructions

1. Find a place on your fabric that is not noticeable, like the underside of the hem on clothing, the back of a piece of furniture, or a hidden corner of carpet.

2. Put a small amount of spot cleaner on the fabric. Rub it in.

3. Use a damp rag to remove any residue left by the cleaner. Allow the fabric to dry completely.

4. Inspect the fabric. If you cannot see where you put the cleaner and there is no discoloration in the fabric, then the fabric is colorfast.

5. If the fabric is colorfast, you can proceed with cleaning the stain. If not, consult a dry cleaner.
