Things You'll Need:
- Pants or jeans
- Seam ripper
- Iron
- Ironing board
- Fabric for inserts
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Needle
-
Step 1
Open the inside leg seams with a seam ripper. Work from the leg bottoms up to the bottom of the fly in front and to the yolk in the back.
-
Step 2
Lay the pants on a flat surface, front up. Lay one side of the front over the other, so the fly lays flat, and pin it in place.
-
Step 3
Determine how long and flared you want your finished skirt to be. Try the garment on. Pin it to fit, and mark your hem.
-
Step 4
Take it off. Press all seams flat, including inner legs. Stitch the full length of the inner leg seams flat on both sides of your garment. Start at the top of the openings and machine sew the center seams to 5/8 inch above the edge where the inner leg seam would begin. Work carefully so you don't get material from the other side of your garment caught in the seam.
-
Step 5
Cut fabric for inserts 1 ½ inches wider than the widest part of the opening and 1 inch longer than your desired length to leave room for seams and hem. Sew them in place, making sure to connect with the center seam. Turn your garment inside out and cut away the excess insert fabric from your seams; leave about 5/8 inch on either side. Press seams open and flat. Repeat for the other side of your garment.
-
Step 6
Trim the bottom edge of your skirt to 1 inch longer than your desired length. Turn ¼ inch of material up. Iron it flat and hand tack in place. Turn up the remaining ¾ inches of your hem; iron it flat and pin it in place. Hand hem your garment and you're finished.
