How to Budget Spending While on Vacation With Kids

Vacation Time
Vacation Time

After taking many trips with our kids, I am going to share some things that have saved us money and helped us stay on budget.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Budget
  • Vacation Reservation
  • Store that sells gift cards
  1. Step 1

Plan a place to go and set a budget of how much you want to spend in total. You will need to include travel, accommodations, entertainment, Food and shopping and incidentals.

  2. Step 2

Depending on how you are going to travel. Look for the best deals. Use the internet to look for discount coupons for car rentals. Also the Entertainment Book has Car Rental Coupons. Have a plan on how you are going to get to the car rental location if it is not on the airport grounds. Most places have a shuttle bus. It cost less per day if you find a car rental office a mile or so away from the airport. They can sometimes pick you up. Otherwise you might have to take a cab. If you are traveling with your own car. Pack a cooler with you so you can have cold beverages. Also if you pack snacks and sandwich fixings you can save money by not stopping for fast food.

  3. Step 3

Search for hotel deals on line. Use travel points if you have them. For example Marriott Rewards or Hilton Honors. The Entertainment books also have hotel discounts. We have found the Inns/Motels can be just as nice and alot of them have refrigerator and microwaves. Many of them have free breakfast also.

  4. Step 4

There are discount cards at Costco and Some larger store chains to some of the major theme parks. It may seem like alot to pay all at once, but it will be well worth it. Pay full price at the gate can be a big budget breaker. The Entertainment Book also has discount coupons.

  5. Step 5

The biggest thing I realized when we would travel is that the kids where always wanted us to buy them things. This would be very frustrating because the kids would start keeping track of who got what and how much it cost. Last year I bought the kids Visa Gift Cards before we left. They all got the same amount on their cards. We noticed that they would think about what they wanted a little more and if they had to use their own money they would know that when it was gone it was gone. We had a wonderful time and the gift cards were wonderful.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the balance once in a while. If you try to by something that cost more than the balance, the transaction might not go through.
  • Write down the number on the card. If it is stolen or lost you can report it.
