How to Download Stock Quotes Into Excel

Downloading stock quotes from Internet into a Microsoft excel workbook is often a necessity. The following steps explain how to download stock quotes from Internet into a spreadsheet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    New stock quotes query
     
    New stock quotes query

    Click on the menu Data->Import External Data->New Web Query.
    The page shown in the picture appears.

  2. Step 2
    Enter Stock symbols
     
    Enter Stock symbols

    Enter the yahoo finance stock quotes download web address along with the stock symbols in the Address box.

    An example query will look like this:
    http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=MSFT+GOOG+YHOO&f=snd1l1yr

    This query will download the current stock quotes for Microsoft, Google and Yahoo. You can substitute your stock symbols.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the Go button. Excel will download the data and it will be shown in the box.

  4. Step 4
    Import stock quotes

    Click on the Import button and then click "OK" button in the Import Data page. This will place all the stock quotes in the first column of the spreadsheet.

  5. Step 5

    Select the first column by clicking the column header. Click on the menu Data->Text to Columns while this first column is selected. Convert Text To Column wizard appears. In this box, make sure "delimited" radio button is selected.

  6. Step 6

    Click on the Next button and select the "comma" check box. You check this box because the stock quotes fields are separated by comma in downloaded data.

  7. Step 7
    Tabulated stock quotes
     
    Tabulated stock quotes

    Click Finish button now. You will see the stock quotes downloaded into excel in a nice table format.
