If you are a home owner chances are you have had ant problems at one time or another. Some of you may have a pest control service helping you, well this is for those of you that don't. From my simple instructions, your ant problems will soon be over.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • empty milk jugs
  • sugar syrup (cheap one)
  • a little piece of cheese
  • Boric acid (bottle with nozzle)
  1. Step 1

Are you looking at those ants making a trail through your childrens rooms and to your bathroom. They are in everything, your garbage, your underwear and they are beginning to really get on your nerves. Judging from this scenario, you probably have at least three colonies with million ants...What are you going to do?

  2. Step 2

When you are dealing with a situation like the one above it is time to take matters into your own hands quickly. Get two of your empty milk jugs if you have several colonies, or one if you seem to have only one. These milk jugs are ideal to use especially when you have toddlers running around or curious dogs.

  3. Step 3

Place the cap on the jug and taking a sharp knife puncture a hole in the center of it and make sure that the flap is still there. You don't just want a hole, you want a flap so that in case a toddler or dog decides to tip over the jug the flap will prevent too much spillage to occur. Now add your ingredients into the jug.

  4. Step 4

Put in about a half cup of sugar syrup into the jug, drop in a small piece of white cheese (they like this the best, I don't know why..), then squirt one to two squirts of Boric acid on top, put the cap back on and gently shake it from side to side so it all mixes. Then take some tape and tape around the cap so the cap stays put. Make sure that the flap is open just enough for ants to travel in and out of the jug.

  5. Step 5

Depending on the number of colonies you have you may want more milk jugs or less, and you may have different placements for them. In my case, I had one in my daughter's room and one in my bathroom. You will notice that the ants come by the millions for at least four days and nights. Resist your urge to wipe out their race and just let them do what they want: go to the jug.

  6. Step 6

Eventually, most of the ants will fall into the sugar syrup and drown so you will see your jug filled with little black specks. About a million of them will be floating in that thing. The other million would have taken the poison back to their nest and killed off their queen. Bingo! that is what we want! We want the queen ant to die so that no more babies can be produced. Even after the ants die, leave the jugs out for two weeks afterwards to see what happens.

  7. Step 7

By doing this, often times you may notice that there are more ants, and they will go to the jugs and take the poison back and even though another four days and nights may go by where you are being tortured to stare at the millions of little ants travelling up your closet walls and to their nest, endure it and pretty soon you will not see any more ants for a good long while. Good luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • Please note that this trick works on pavement ants that like protein and sugar. It may not work on carpenter ants or any other ants that don't like protein or sugar so in this case you may need to call pest control.
  • This trick is great but remember to keep an eye on your toddler so she doesn't try to drink from it. Still, the flap will keep from a lot of it coming out and it is better than the little baits that seem to work short-term and that are hazadrous to eat.
  • If a toddler swallows this mix call Poison Control right away.
  • I personally don't know to this day if my toddler swallowed any but the day she touched my jug and got sticky, I washed her and gave her some activated charcoal in yogurt to eat.
  • To avoid poisoning or spillage, try to put the jugs in a higher place than the floor.
