Things You'll Need:
- Lightener kit such as Clairol Blonde Maxi
- Blonde hair dye
- a highlighting/ painter's brush
- gloves
- a chair
- a friend
- a place to dye your hair
- shampoo
-
Step 1
Buy a bleaching/lightening kit like Clairol Born Blonde Maxi and apply to roots (for touch up) or to whole head if dying it all light blonde for the first time
-
Step 2
Buy your preferred hair dye color that you would ultimately like your hair to end up looking like. Go a shade or two darker, if you would like, since your hair will be at a very light base color once you apply the initial lightener.
-
Step 3
Apply the lightening hair kit first and leave on for at least 45 minutes. Part your hair in the middle before you start dying your hair. Apply the dye to your roots first and then use a downward motion with a brush to insure all of your hair is covered from the roots to the end.
-
Step 4
Then make a part directly next to your initial middle part (on either side) and repeat the same process going downward on each side of the head. You will need to do the left, right and back of your hair using this same pattern. Have a friend help you get the back of your hair to insure it is not sloppy or uneven in any way. Eventually your entire head will be covered. After about 45 minutes of the dye sitting on your head (not including how long it took to apply the dye) you can shampoo the lightener out of your hair. Do not condition at this time.
-
Step 5
Please do not panic when you dry your hair. Keep in mind this is like a canvas for your color and is not what your hair will actually look or feel like when you put the color in it. Your hair may be rough and white until you put the color in because you have stripped the pigment from your hair temporarily. Comb your hair gently and wait for your hair to dry.
-
Step 6
Next, make sure your hair is dry before this next process. You can either apply the actual color directly after you lighten your hair, or if you choose to do it on a weekend where you will not be seen, you can do it the following day.
-
Step 7
Follow the steps on the hair dye box. Make sure you apply the color in even patterns using the same process as you did with the lightener. Depending on how long your hair is, you may actually end up needing two boxes of the same hair color to cover your entire head. Generally, the color will only need to be in for about 15 to 30 minutes tops. Shampoo and condition your hair and style as usual after the dye is done processing. Your hair should be a beautiful light blonde color that all will envy!!!
-
Step 8
In between colorings, the temporary touch-up kits you buy at the store are particularly useful, especially if you have dark roots.
