      Windows Boot Control Center

Boot up your computer into safe mode. To do this, shut your computer completely down, then boot up. Keep hitting the F8 key on your keyboard till you see a black screen with text on the left hand side. Highlight "SAFE MODE" or "SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING" and hit enter.

The icon for Documents and Settings under Windows XP.

Once your computer boots, go into your folders that contain your personal files, weather it be in your My Documents, or other, and transfer them via CD or thumb drive (its best to go by a 4-8gig thumb drive...they're cheap now and once you have it, you have it for years). To locate all your personal files like favorites, etc...navigate up to the My Computer icon, then click your hard drive (usually C:) then click "DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS". You'll then see the username in a folder that you log in with.
This folder contains all your personal items. You may back up this entire thing or, go into each folder and find only the things you want. Usually Favorites and My Documents are the two biggest people request. Then for later, when you want to upload your files to the fresh computer, just copy them to this location again!

Once you've backed everything up, go ahead and shut down your computer. You either now have one of two things. You have the original Windows XP cd, or you have actual recovery CD's for your computer. For the recovery CD's, just turn on your computer, insert the first CD, and let it boot. Its usually self explanitory after that.

      Windows Boot Screen

If you only have a Windows XP CD, insert it as soon as you turn on your computer. When you see the prompt that says "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD" hit any key. If you dont see this prompt, let it boot up, then restart the computer.

***REMEMBER HOW TO ENTER SAFE MODE!!! You can now use it incase you screw something up on your computer to get access to it again!***

      XP's Welcome to Setup Page

You know XP Setup is loading by its blue screen. It takes awhile to load all its buildable drivers. Its purely text based. From here, hit enter, then hit page down to read the license agreement and hit F8 once you hit the bottom (This is all explained on the screen).

      XP's Partition Setup

Once you see a screen that sets up "Partitions", you should see a large chunk of a "C:" drive. Look familiar? This is your hard drive's partition for Windows XP! Go ahead and delete that partition...follow the instructions on the screen. Now you'll have no partitioned space, and it should look like the photo below.

      XP's Hard Drive Format Screen

Hit enter to setup XP on this unpartitioned space. Once you see the "format" screen, hit the down arrow to "FORMAT THE PARTITION USING THE NTFS FILE SYSTEM" and hit enter. This will essentially scrub your hard drive clean of any data you had before. Once it is complete, it will install Windows XP for you.

Follow the instructions on the screen till Windows XP installs. Once you reach your desktop again, simply copy your backed up files back into their respectful folders. (C:/Documents and Settings/ (insert username here)

Thats it! Now you just saved yourself a ton of money, and your computer is 100% FREE of Viruses!!!

Tips & Warnings

  • Have a friend or relative handy who's formatted a computer before...at least at a phone call's reach. Alot of people can be very intimidated by this process, but its really as easy as washing your car. Once you've done it, you'll never forget how to do it.

  • BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! Make sure you back up all your data you wish to save. If you could care less, go ahead and start wiping it.
