It is okay to ask your boss's personal assistant if he or she is in a good mood that day. If you boss is in a good mood, the chances of them being more receptive to what you have to say will increase. Make sure that what you have to say is important. If it can be sent through an email, don't make an appointment with your boss to talk to them. This will only frustrate them and shut down their chances of listening to you.

You're MY boss? I should be YOUR boss!

We've all dealt with the type of boss that feels like he has a monkey in the closet to make his or her decisions for them. Complimenting a boss will probably help him or her to listen to your concerns, but make sure the rest of your coworkers do not see you brown-nosing or you may never get the end of it from them.

Have a plan ready to go before you enter your boss's office and have it on paper so he or she can read it again later. Most supervisors like individuals that take the initiative to move forward on their own. Sometimes, you will have a boss that is a micro-manager. This is not the type of boss that likes you to come up with plans, but likes to consider them his or her idea. If you can convince them that it is their idea, you will win over this individual. Use phrases like, "I thought about what you said the other day and it made me think about this..." You will be surprised how far this goes.

When you meet your boss at the coffee pot or in the elevator, take the time to ask them about their life outside of work. Make it sound as if you follow their life and care about their goals. Everyone likes to talk about themselves and people will want to know who you are if you take an interest in them.

Be positive about the future of the business or the company. No one likes an individual that comes in to nag. Negativity gets people nowhere! Be positive, shoot straight, and you will see how your boss will respond to this!

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't approach your boss when they are busy or in a bad mood no matter how important you think your plan is. Wait until tomorrow if at all possible.
