How to Sew and Embroider on the New Machines

How to Sew and Embroider on the New Machines thumbnail
New-model sewing machines include embroidery software and attachments.

Top sewing machine manufacturers such as Bernina, Janome and Singer, recently have begun making combination sewing-and-embroidery machines. The machines offer attachments to make embroidering your project a cinch. Even those with no previous embroidery experience can master large embroidery projects in a matter of moments. The machines connect to a computer that uses software to assist you in creating the designs, and then the software tells the machine to sew for you.

Instructions

  1. Sewing

    • 1

Attach the presser foot for sewing or embroider. These presser feet typically snap or screw in place, and most manufacturers offer a wide variety of feet aimed at helping you complete every type of sewing task imaginable.

    • 2

Thread the machine and insert a full bobbin reel.

    • 3

Adjust the tension and set the machine to the desired stitch pattern.

    • 4

Place the project under the presser foot. Lower the presser foot using the lever at the back of the needle housing and begin sewing.

    • 5

Guide the fabric as it is pulled under the needle by the feed dogs. Continue guiding until the project is completed.

    Embroidery

    • 6

Follow Steps 1 to 3 above to set up the machine.

    • 7

Connect the machine to the computer via the USB cord supplied with the sewing machine. Connect any embroidery attachments required.

    • 8

Use the software to set up the project, enlarging or shrinking as desired.

    • 9

Place the project in the hoops, as directed by the program and attach the hoops to the machine.

    • 10

      Lower the presser foot.

    • 11

Begin sewing and continue until directed by the software to move the hoop or change the thread color. Follow any on-screen instructions until the project is completed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another common feature on the new machines is the Start/Stop button, which allows you to start or stop the machine from sewing by pressing a button rather than sitting at the machine with your foot on the pedal.

  • If your machine is not a combination sewing and embroidery machine, you can still free-motion embroidery by attaching a darning and embroidery foot.
