How to Grow Truffles Indoors
Truffles are small, lumpy, white mushrooms that grow on the roots of hazelnut, pine and oak trees. A tree with roots containing truffle spores may take up to a year to produce truffles; they are rare because of this. It is possible to grow truffles by planting seeds fallen from a tree with truffles on its roots, but a more reliable method is to buy a sapling inoculated with truffle spores. Although it takes time for the first truffle crop to form, after the first crop, a tree can produce truffles for many years. Does this Spark an idea?

- Terra-cotta pot and drainage plate, 3 feet in diameter

Place a terra-cotta pot on top of a drainage plate near a sunny window in a room that maintains a temperature of between 70 and 75 degrees, as truffles need a very temperate climate. Fill the pot about halfway with soil mixed with small gravel or sand. Truffles need soil with very good drainage; otherwise, they may rot.

Gently unwrap the root ball of a sapling that has been inoculated with truffle spores, untangling the roots slightly with your fingers. Put the sapling in the center of the pot, and scoop soil over the roots until they are completely covered.

Water the tree every other day. Empty the drainage plate when you notice water pooling and not being absorbed or evaporated.

Wait about a year and check the soil. Look for small, rounded lumps around the roots. Gently probe the soil with your fingers to find any truffles.

Sorry to be blunt, but that is a gross oversimplification of the process and it would take many years to go from spore to fruiting. an innoculated seedling would be lucky to produce anything after five or six years when planted outdoors. Please dig a little deeper inbto research land before trying this.

Just about everything you just said is false. Truffles are found in lots of places, including on the west coast, and in several regions of Canada. Ever heard of the Oregon Truffle (it's actually Californian) Truffles are routinely cultivated in small batches and even indoors. There are Chinese truffles, asiatics, burman, russian, etc... They DO grow on pines, as that is one of the varieties of trees that grows a particular type. Container grown trees can produce small truffles in as little as a year or two. With properly aerated, free-draining medium, truffles can easily be grown in containers... AND watered everyday. But, hey, you're obviously enough of an "expert" to be calling the article writer a "moron".

This article is totally false. Whoever wrote it has no idea what they are talking about. I am a truffle farmer living in the mid-Atlantic region of the US, one of the only places other than Europe where truffles grow with any certainty. For one they do not grow on pines. Secondly they take 4 to 5 years to produce and they have to be grown in orchards of half an acre in size to ensure the truffle inoculated trees can out compete other fungi near them. Third growing trees in a pot and watering them every other day is a sure way to get root rot and kill not only the tree but the fungi responsible for forming truffles. Moron.
