Instructions

    • 1

Frost the entire round cake white.

    • 2

Pick a location that is slightly off-center for the beginning of the yellow brick road. Place yellow frosting in a piping bag and create a circular, looping path that leads from the starting location, around the outside of the cake and around to the opposite side.

    • 3

Cut a small, 1-nch cube from a second baked cake. Frost this square white and use a black edible pen to draw windows and a door. Frost the top brown or place a chocolate square on top for the roof. Cut the bottom of the square slightly so that the house sits tilted on the cake. Place the house near the start of the yellow brick road.

    • 4

Use red frosting to create the ruby slippers. Create the two slippers beside the house.

    • 5

Cut a 2- or 3-inch cube from the spare cake. Use a sharp knife to sculpt this section to represent the Emerald City. Frost the finished product green and use green sugar sprinkles to add a glittery effect. Place the Emerald City at the opposite end of the yellow brick road.

    • 6

Near the middle of the yellow brick road, press plastic trees into the cake. These should stand on their own once they are embedded in the cake.

    • 7

Close to the Emerald City, create a small field of poppies by piping red frosting through a flower tip.

    • 8

Add characters from the movie by printing their pictures from the computer. Tape the images to a toothpick and insert the toothpick into the cake. Include Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, Glenda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West in various locations along the yellow brick road.

    • 9

Sort a large bag of M&Ms or Skittles by color. Create a rainbow around the side of the cake by placing the candies in layers of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decorating mistakes can be avoided by using a toothpick to map the intended location of the road, house, Emerald City and other items before actually decorating. If the rainbow candies start to slide off the sides of the cake or are hard to place, freeze the cake for 10-20 minutes before attaching the candies. Freeze again immediately after the candies are in place. To make cutting the spare cake easier, freeze it for 20 minutes before carving. To save money on frosting, use a white frosting such as cream cheese or butter cream and add food coloring for the various colors. If the cake is for a birthday party, use computer software to substitute the birthday person's face onto the body of Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow or the Cowardly Lion.
