After World War I, the red poppy became the flower of remembrance for the servicemen that died defending their country. Artificial red poppies are often sold on Memorial Day weekend in honor of our servicemen and the proceeds go to support U.S. military men and women. Making your own poppies at home is very simple and make a great project for a classroom.
Things You'll Need
- Red crepe paper
- Green floral wire
- Green floral tape
Cut three 4-inch circles out of red crepe paper. Stack the circles on top of each other. You can make smaller flowers by cutting 3-inch circles or larger flowers by cutting 5-inch circles.
Using a large sewing needle, poke two holes in the middle of the circles about 1/4 inch apart. Be sure to punch the holes through all the layers of the crepe paper.
Cut an 8-inch piece of green floral wire. Holding the stack of circles, insert 3 inches of the wire through one of the holes, bend the wire and insert through the other hole to the back of the circles. Twist the 3-inches of wire around the long piece of wire to secure.
Wrap green floral tape around the wire. Start at the bottom of the wire, and wrap up upward to right under the flower, then wrap back around to the bottom covering the end of the wire.
Pull the crepe paper apart to form the petals of the poppy. If desired, hot glue a small black button in the center of the flower. Place the flower in a buttonhole to wear.
