It can be a daunting task to keep a toddler in bed when first making the transition from a crib. He might be afraid at first, showing up at the foot of your bed several times a night. Or he might decide to turn on the lights and play with his toys during sleeping times. Either way it can be difficult to keep him in bed at first, but with some patience you can ensure that your child stays in his or her bed.

Things You'll Need:

  • Story books
  • Nightlight
  1. Step 1

Start a routine with your child to get her accustomed to going to bed. If you prefer, offer a bedtime snack, followed by a bath and teeth brushing. Tell your child to use the restroom before bed. Try reading a storybook to your child before lights out.

  2. Step 2

Assure your child that you will be in your room if needed, but only for emergencies. Leave the room once storytime is over. You may decide to put a nightlight on near your child's bed to make him comfortable.

  3. Step 3

If your child wakes up during the night and comes to you, stay calm and reassuring, but promptly take her back to bed. Tuck your child in again, and assure her that you are still right in your room. Leave the room quickly so your child doesn't expect you to stay with her every night.
