When they hear the word "clay," some people picture young children making figurines of animals or people. Others think of professional artists making vases and bowls on a pottery wheel. Many overlook the fact that jewelry makers often use clay to make beads for necklaces, bracelets and other accessories. One need not be a professional to make clay bead jewelry. Crafting and jewelry enthusiasts alike can make clay beads at home and use them to make homemade accessories.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Colored polymer clay
  • Clay knife
  • Acrylic roller
  • Wooden skewers
  • Aluminum foil
  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven
  • Sandpaper
  • Embroidery floss or yarn
  • Scissors
  • Composition gold leaf
  1. Step 1

Use a clay knife to chop up several blocks of different colored clays. Bigger blocks of colors will dominate the beads' color scheme. Keep chopping until you have a mixture of finely chopped clay bits.

  2. Step 2

Shape chopped clay into one mass with your hands. To make round beads, pinch off small amounts from the mass and roll them between your hands until you have a smooth sphere. For cube-shaped beads, continue shaping the mass until you have a rough block shape. Perfect the block by flattening each of its faces with an acrylic roller. Use a clay knife to slice the block into strips and then cut each strip into small cubes.

  3. Step 3

Hold each bead between your thumb and index finger. Stick a wooden skewer into one end of the bead and bring it out through the opposite end. Rotate the skewer inside the bead several times before pulling it out.

  4. Step 4

Cover the inside of a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the beads onto the foil. Preheat your oven and bake the beads according to the clay manufacturer's instructions.

  5. Step 5

Remove the baking sheet from the oven. After the beads have cooled off, buff the surfaces by smoothing them with sandpaper.

  6. Step 6

Decide whether you wish to wear the beads around your neck, wrist or ankle. Wrap a piece of embroidery floss or yarn around the chosen body part to determine how much of the material you should cut.

  7. Step 7

Use scissors cut off the necessary length of string. Put the string through the hole of each bead. Finish by tying the string around your neck, ankle or wrist.

Tips & Warnings
  • To add gold flecks to your beads, tear up composition gold leaf and mix the pieces in with the clay bits.
  • To avoid headaches and feeling sick due to fumes, bake the clay in a well-ventilated room.
