How to Make Funny Faces

Funny faces are emoticons that are placed in instant messages, profiles, e-mails and message boards. You'll find a host of smiley faces on the Web that you can add to instant messages, or you can create one from scratch using your favorite graphics software. Funny faces are often yellow in color, but they don't have to be. You can customize your funny face however you like.

Things You'll Need

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Open Adobe Photoshop and go to "File." Click "New." In the "New" dialog box, select a height and width of 20 pixels and leave the background transparent.

  • Select the "Create a new layer" button from the bottom of the "Layers" palette. Zoom in on your image by selecting "Ctrl++" until your canvas is 1000% in size.

  • Change your foreground color to yellow in the "Color Picker" dialog box.

  • Select the "Ellipse" tool from the toolbox. Holding down the "Shift" key on your keyboard, draw a circle on the canvas.

  • Select the layer you just created in the "Layers" palette and click the "Add a layer style" button. Pick the "Stroke" option to create an outline for the face. In the "Layer Style" dialog box, select a stroke size of one pixel and a black color, then click "OK."

  • Select the "Create a new layer" button from the "Layers" palette. Then select the "Brush" tool and change the brush size to two pixels in the options bar.

  • Switch the foreground and background colors by clicking the "Switch Foreground and Background Colors" (X) option from the toolbox, so your foreground is now black. Then draw two eyes on the circle you created for the funny face.

  • Add a new layer to your "Layers" palette and select the "Pencil" tool. Draw a mouth to create a funny face.

  • Save the funny face file by selecting "File, Save for Web." In the "Save for Web" dialog box, select a ".gif" format for your image to retain the transparent background. Give your file a name and click on "Save."

  • Save a raw version of your image as well by selecting "File" then "Save As." Add a file name and accept the default Photoshop format. Your funny face is now ready for use.
