Sign up for a free blog. Blogspot and Wordpress are two popular options. You can also create a personal website with a unique domain name for a small monthly fee. A personal website will ultimately help you to make more money blogging, but if you have limited financial resources there is nothing wrong with starting out with one of the free blog sites. After you start earning steady income you can set up a personal site and transfer your old content to the new blog.

Stay on topic. For example, if your blog is called "New Yorker living in California" then your topics should relate to being a New Yorker living in California. Staying on topic will help you to gain an audience; you won't make money blogging if you are the only reader. You should choose a topic that holds a great deal of interest for you. Something you're passionate about will provide you with the drive you need to post often.

Post often. There are millions of blogs on the Internet, most of them completely abandoned or, at best, updated sporadically. You need to build a loyal following in order to make money blogging, and any audience you may find will drift away if you go long periods of time between updates. Conventional wisdom from the most successful bloggers states that you should write a new post three to five times per week, every week, for the life of the blog. These posts should be at least four hundred words in length in order to rank well in the search engines, although some successful bloggers have posts ranging anywhere from one to ten thousand words in length.

Monetize the blog. Now that you have built up your readership, you've got quite a few choices when it comes to monetizing your blog. Google Adsense, affiliate programs, and ebook sales are just a few choices for monetizing your blog. If you own the domain name that your blog is published to, you can also make steady money by allowing interested parties to advertise on your blog by charging them a monthly fee. Ebook sales, affiliate sales, and private advertising are the steadiest ways to make money blogging.
