How to Create You Own Chroma Key Backdrop

Creating a green screen doesn't have to be expensive.

Chroma key compositing is the process of combining two images to create one image. This process is also commonly referred to as green screen, referencing the bright green backdrop used to film the actors who will be part of the chroma key process. You can purchase a professionally made green screen cloth. However, this can be very expensive especially if you don't plan on using it often. Luckily, you can create your own green screen using just poster boards and transparent tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay six to eight bright green poster boards on a flat surface. Use more poster boards if you need a larger backdrop. You can purchase bright green poster boards at an arts supply store.

    • 2

Tape the green poster boards together to make one large board. Align the edges of the poster boards and use transparent tape to tape them together.

    • 3

Flip the green screen backdrop over, lift it up carefully and place transparent tape behind the green screen to hold it in place.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1 to 3 to create new green screens for other areas that need to be covered.

    • 5

Roll up the green screen carefully if you need to transport it somewhere else. Store the green screen in a clean, dry place.
