Some goals are very concrete and easily defined by a To-Do list: finish a certain number of pages, write a script for a new project, design a new character for the next story arc, just to name a few examples. Others, however, can be more involved, long-reaching and just plain tough to pin down. For these goals and ideas—a vision board can give you a visual reminder of what you are striving for in your art—and what you are working towards as a professional. Here are steps to creating yours.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bulletin board, cork board, poster paper or folder
  • Magazines and books
  • Scanner and printer (optional) or copier access
  • Scissors
  • Glue, staples or push-pins
  1. Step 1

Decide what surface your vision board will cover and where it will be located. These two decisions often go hand in hand, as the vision board cannot exceed the space available. Where it goes should be somewhere in your eye-line whether it's where you see it when you first wake up in the morning, walk into your office or hangs over your desk or drawing table. Cork and bulletin boards are good for constantly changing vision boards, while poster board or folders are better for smaller spaces and a more permanent display.

  2. Step 2

Flip through magazines and books to find images that resonate with what you want to achieve. This could be anything from mastering figure drawing the way an admired artist does, images of awards you would like to be eligible for or even images that convey the type of work environment you want to have: whatever inspires you.

  3. Step 3

Cut out the images you like most and affix them to your board. If you don't want to cut up a comic book or other source material, make a photocopy of the image or scan and print it out. As long as you can include the image in your goal collage, it doesn't matter how you get them there.

  4. Step 4

Hang or place your finished vision board in your chosen spot. Each day when you begin work or whenever you feel frustrated with a project, client or technique, take a moment to reflect on these images and what they mean to you. Remind yourself why you're doing this, what you hope to achieve, and let those ideas help you through the difficult moments.

  5. Step 5

Reevaluate your board from time to time. Goals are always changing, so remove those images that no longer inspire you or which you've already achieved and replace them with new images that represent new goals. Sometimes, it's best to start all over when there's a big shift in your work life.

Tips & Warnings
  • No one says a vision board has to be a board. String up images on a clothesline with clips or even create a digital collage on your computer to use as your desktop image.
