Plumbing is a great career choice if you like working with your hands and seeing concrete results at the end of each day. Plus, you have the opportunity to work for a contractor or become an entrepreneur running your own business. Either way, you will earn a solid income and have real job satisfaction. Becoming a plumber involves following a prescribed track.

Excel in high school and concentrate in classes such as mathematics, science and shop.

Look for apprenticeship programs. You will gain invaluable experience working under the guidance of a journeyman plumber while getting paid and completing a certain number of hours of school weekly. Apprenticeship programs generally last four years. If you can get into a program, do not fail to take advantage of the opportunity.

Attending a trade school is the route many take. It teaches everything you need to know about plumbing, giving you all the training you need. You will learn how to install and repair gas, put up water and waste systems for commercial, residential and industrial clients and much more. When you complete your schooling, you will be ready to seek employment.

Obtain a license as necessary. Though no national licensing requirements exist, most states require a license. Typically, it involves passing an exam and having two to five years of experience. If you decide to work on gas lines, an additional license is often required.
